Accelerated biodegradation of cement by sulfur-oxidizing bacteria as a bioassay for evaluating immobilization of low-level radioactive waste
Article Abstract:
A simple procedure for accelerating the biodegradation of cement pastes by incubating samples in semicontinuous cultures of sulfur-oxidizing bacteria grown on thiosulfate as the sole energy source is reported. Results indicate that there were low levels of binding of cesium in cement and thus, immobilization of cesium is challenging and needs careful selection of additives to be introduced into the cement mixture to aid in binding the cesium ions.

Rapid acyl-homoserine lactone quorum signal biodegradation in diverse soils
Article Abstract:
The radiolabled acyl-homoserine lactones (acyl-HSL) are synthesized to examine their fate when amended at low concentrations, relevant to quorum sensing, to buffered bulk soil slurries and other samples. The biological signal decay might either promote or complicate cellular communications and the accuracy of population density-based controls on gene expression in species-rich ecosystems.
