H(sub)2O(sub)2-nonproducing Streptococcus pyogenes strains: survival in stationary phase and virulence in chronic granulomatous disease
Article Abstract:
Accumulation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in non-H2O2-producing Streptococcus pyogenes strains, during the late exponential phase, results in the loss of cell viability but can be prevented by catalase, suggesting that H2O2 is the cause of lethality. Furthermore non-H2O2-producing strains exhibit resistance to phagocyte killing in chronic granulomatous disease patients.

Identification of a novel glycoprotein-binding activity in Streptococcus pyogenes regulated by the mga gene
Article Abstract:
Results reveal that in the majority of Streptococcus pyognes strains a glycoprotein-binding activity is detected in thyroglobulin, fetuin, asialofetuin and mucin glycoproteins. Data further indicate that the binding activity is regulated by the bacterial virulence factor regulating gene Mga.

A GAS-like gene family in the pathogenic fungus Candida glabrata
Article Abstract:
Research shows that the cell wall biosynthesis and assembly in Candida glabrata is mediated by two genes, CgGAS1 and CgGAS2, of the CgGAS1-3 gene family. Mutants lacking these genes exhibit phenotypes that display altered bud morphology and cell aggregation.
