Hybridization between sika deer (Cervus nippon) and axis deer (Axis axis)
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze an incidence of hybridization from natural mating between sika deer and axis deer. The hybridization was verified by the gel electrophoresis of three blood proteins from the putative hybrid, the putative sika deer sire and three axis deer hinds from the herd. Chromosome counts were then carried out on 15 cells per individual. Results indicated that the hybrid is phylogenetically the widest cross yet observed within the subfamily Cervinae.

Mitochondrial DNA polymorphism in subspecies of the Japanese Sika deer, Cervus nippon
Article Abstract:
Genetic differences due to mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variation of the Japanese Sika deer were evaluated. The tests showed that the Hokkaido-Honshu cluster and the Yakushima-Tsushima have evolved as the two major deer populations in the Japanese islands. The 4% ceiling of mtDNA divergence indicated subspecies variation levels. Thus, other biochemical and morphological studies have to be integrated to expand theoretical investigation of Sika deer evolution.

Microsatellite Analysis of Genetic Diversity of the Vietnamese Sika Deer (Cervus nippon pseudaxis)
Article Abstract:
Nine microsatellite loci are used to assess the effects of a limited population and breeding practices on Cervus nippon pseudaxis, the Vietnamese sika deer. Findings show evidence for isolation and for limited local inbreeding, as exchange of animals alleviates high levels of inbreeding. Genetic variability is sufficient for selection of individuals for wilderness reintroduction.
