Organization of repetitive elements in the upland cotton genome (Gossypium hirsutum)
Article Abstract:
Gossypium hirsutum is an allotetraploid cultivated species of the upland cotton plant. Repetitive elements of the valuable agricultural product were isolated through an examination of 1,728 independent clones from the primary genome library. After probe hybridization, 1,047 clones, representing 60.6% of screened recombinant cosmids, did not hybridize to any of the nine extrapolated clones without inserts. Thus, the upland cotton plant genome showed a limited family range and abundant repetition.

Genetic analysis of two terpenoid variants in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.)
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze the genetics of two terpenoid aldehyde variants transferred to G. hirsutum L. Direct backcrossing to G. hirsutum was carried to transfer a high level of methylation from G. barbadense l. The genetic standard for G. hirsutum was utilized as the normal tester for the inheritance studies. Results indicated that no terpenoid aldehyde variants supported any linkage with the markers.

Low abundance of microsatellite repeats in the genome of the brown-headed cowbird (Molothrus ater)
Article Abstract:
Microsatellites are commonly used as genetic markers because of their wide distribution within the genome and their ease of analysis using the polymerase chain reaction. A new study uses microsatellite oligomers to examine a multiple representation cosmid library made from brown-headed cowbird DNA. The study suggests that the density of microsatellites within avian genomes is reduced compared to humans.
