Hyrophobicities and electrophoretic mobilities of anaerobic bacterial isolates from methanogenic granular sludge
Article Abstract:
The contact angles and electrophoretic mobilities of isolates from granular methanogenic sludge were measured and compared to the values of strains obtained from culture collections. The results showed that hydrophobic bacteria were predominant in the methnogenic sludge. The observed electrophoretic mobilities of the strains were variable. Characterization of Methanothrix soehngenii, a common constituent of granular methnogenic sludge, showed high hydrophobicity and low electrophoretic mobility at pH 7. These, and its morphological properties enhance bacterial adhesion, and gives this species a key role in stabilizing granular sludge or biofilms.

Inhibition of anaerobic phosphate release by nitric oxide in activated sludge
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to examine the inhibition of phosphate release by nitrate in activated sludge at the molecular level. The degradation of polyphosphate (poly(P)) was mainly catalyzed by the combined action of poly(P):AMP phosphotransferase and adenylate kinase that led to adenosine triphosphate formation. Results demonstrate that nitrate, through its conversion to NO, may suppress the growth of poly(P)-accumulating bacteria by inhibiting their carbon metabolism. Findings also suggest that bacteria that belong to the genus Acinetobacter are not responsible for poly(P) accumulation in activated sludges.

The lab-scale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor experiments are presented that have focused on the microbiology of methanethiol (MT) degradation. The metabolic properties of the reactor sludge, the microbial community in the reactor and enriched MT-degrading microorganisms are analyzed.
