Identification of Xenopus SMC protein complexes required for sister chromatid cohesion
Article Abstract:
Studies show that mitotic chromosome assembly is regulated by two specific classes of protein complexes within the structural maintenance of chromosomes (SMC) family. Cohesins bind to interphase chromatin separately from DNA replication, then dissociate once mitosis begins. Condensins are present in mitosis resulting from the cohesin binding, but are unaffected by cohesin immunodepletion.

ATP-dependent positive supercoiling of DNA by 13S condensin: a biochemical implication for chromosome condensation
Article Abstract:
The five-unit protein complex, 13S condensin, is vital to Xenopus egg extracts' mitotic chromosome condensation. 13S condensin subunits XCAP-E and XCAP-C is included in the family of putative adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase). Studies also reveal that 13S condensin exhibits DNA-stimulated ATPase functions and a strong affinity for cruciform DNA and other structured DNAs.

Differential contributions of condensin I and condensin II to mitotic chromosome architecture in vertebrate cells
Article Abstract:
Research shows that the chromosomal proteins condensin I and II share the same pair of structural maintenance of chromosomes (SMC) subunits and in addition contain different sets of non-SMC subunits. Results demonstrate that they individually contribute to mitotic chromosome architecture and their absence causes severe defects in chromosome morphology.
