Bacterial populations colonizing and degrading rice straw in anoxic paddy soil
Article Abstract:
Most of the bacteria in anoxic rice straw paddies belong to the genus Clostridium, particularly clusters I, III, and XIVa. Cytophage-Flavobacterium, alpha, beta, and gamma Proteobacteria and Bacillus were also present in smaller numbers.

Identification of acetate-assimilating microorganisms under methanogenic conditions in anoxic rice field soil by comparative stable isotope probing of RNA
Article Abstract:
The assimilation of acetate generated in the anoxic rice field during the degradation of organic matter by microorganisms is studied using isotopes of carbon. The bacteria were found to utilize acetate under methanogenic conditions where carbon dioxide is the predominant electron acceptor on the polymerase chain reaction analysis of RNA isolated from the bacterial cells.

Novel euryarchaeotal lineages detected on rice roots and in the anoxic bulk soil of flooded rice microcosms
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to characterize unique euryachaeotal lineages detected on rice roots and in the anoxic bulk soil fo rice microcosms. Enzymatic lysis of microbial cells were carried out for two different rice root batches. The ARB program package was then utilized to carry out phylogenetic analyses. Results indicated that the relative proportions of Methanosaeta-like sequences and rice cluster I sequences were different in the archaeal rDNA clone libraries produced from rice roots.
