Importance of 3-hydroxy fatty acid composition of lipopeptides for biosurfactant activity
Article Abstract:
The biosurfactant concentration and amino acid and fatty acid compositions of a number of lipopeptide biosurfactants produced by strains of Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus mojavensis are examined to understand the factors that influence biosurfactant activity. The results show that the fatty acid composition of lipopeptide biosurfactants is important for their activity and that manipulation of the medium composition to change the composition of the lipopeptide fatty acids might result in biosurfactants with higher specificity.

Cloning and characterization of two xyloglucanases from Paenibacillus sp. strain KM21
Article Abstract:
Two xyloglucan-specific endo-beta-1,4-glucanases (xyloglucanases [XEGs]), XEG5 and XEG74, are isolated from the gram-positive bacterium Paenibacillus species strain KM21 and the genes encoding these XEGs are cloned and sequenced. The analysis using various oligosaccharide structures has shown that unique structures of xyloglucan oligosaccharides can be prepared with XEG74.

Identification and characterization of ComE and ComF, two novel pilin-like competence factors involved in natural transformation of Acinetobacter sp. strain BD413
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to elucidate the molecular basis of the competency for natural transformation in soil bacteria employing chromosomal walking analysis. Results show that multiple pilin-like genes, ComE and ComF, are involved in the transformation.
