Individual diet difference, parental care and reproductive success in slaty-backed gulls
Article Abstract:
Diet choice is directly related to chick survival and growth in slaty-backed gulls (Larus schistisagus). Pairs delivering more seabird chicks raised faster-growing chicks and more fledglings due to the higher energy value found in seabird chicks. Hunting-prone males spend less time foraging and more time on territory than fishing-prone males. Females paired with hunting-prone males spend less time in the territory, yet were able to raise more fledglings. Diet variation between pairs affects the sharing of parental care between mates, and hence it also affects reproductive success.

Dividing pattern and stomach temperatures of foraging King Cormorants at subantarctic Macquarie Island
Article Abstract:
Stomach temperature and dive depth recordings using micro data loggers are effective in determining the feeding activities of seabirds such as King Cormorants. The use of two temperature sensors at the top and bottom of the loggers reveals that the stomach temperatures fluctuate between 36 to 43 degrees celsius. The temperature is higher at the top of the logger than at the bottom. This temperature difference is higher during foraging trips than when birds are in their nests. This method is unable to determine the time for food ingestion.

Bias associated with diet samples in Audouin's Gulls
Article Abstract:
Five different types of food samples from Audouin's Gull were analyzed during its two breeding seasons. Significant differences between the taxonomic levels were revealed between the taxonomic levels of identification by each type of diet sample. Food samples such as spontaneous regurgitates, dry boil, food remains, pellets and prey were identified during direct observations of chick provisioning.
