The marine cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. WH7805 requires urease (urea amidohydrolase, EC 3.5.1.5) to utilize urea as a nitrogen source: molecular-genetic and biochemical analysis of the enzyme
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze the genetic and biochemical basis of the use of urea as a nitrogen source utilizing a model marine picophytoplankton, the unicellular cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. strain WH7805. WH7806 urea was stored at suboptimal pH because of its unstability under conditions suitable for its activity. Results indicated the importance of cloned urease genes in the ability of cyanobacteria to use urea as a nitrogen source.

The sigA gene encoding the major sigma factor of RNA polymerase from the marine cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. strain PCC 7002: cloning and characterization
Article Abstract:
Synechococcus sp. strain PCC 7002 DNA is found to encode a protein of 375 amino acids necessary for viability under a normal growth environment. Analyzing the structure and function of the sigma factors required an identification of the sigma factor protein encoding the principal sigma factor. The nucleotide sequence, molecular cloning, and transcriptional characterization of the Synechococcus sp. strain PCC 7002 sigA gene are reported.
