Induction and the developmental zeitgeist
Article Abstract:
A meeting on developmental biology was held in Aland, Finland, from June 14-17, 1995. The materials which were presented have indicated that an increasing number of developmental biologists are focusing more on systems rather than genes. This first class meeting was organized in celebration of the retirement of Lauri Saxen. His work with Sulo Toivonen in the 1960s laid the foundation for inductive interactions in the anterior-posterior patterning in Xenopus neural tube.

Tinkering: A metaphor uniting evolutionary and developmental biology
Article Abstract:
The Novartis symposium 'Tinkering: Microevolution of Development' (July 2006) has brought together evolutionary, developmental and population biologists and has promised to set the groundwork for the conclusive synthesis of these fields. These meetings might change the direction of research in evolutionary developmental biology and might lead to its decisive synthesis with the field of evolutionary biology.

Evolutionary developmental biology of the cerebral cortex
Article Abstract:
A symposium on the evolution and developmental biology of the cerebral cortex was held in April 1999 by the Novartis Foundation. Main topics included models of cerebral cortex organization and phylogenetic relations, cellular and molecular mechanisms of cortex development, and determination of different cortical areas.
