Identification of Vibrio proteolyticus with a differential medium and a specific probe
Article Abstract:
Vibrio proteolyticus strains are easily identifiable using the VP8 culture medium and an oligonucleotide probe. VP8 is selective and differential for V. proteolytic strains. The bacteria ferment D-sorbitol and form bright yellow colonies on VP8. Other bacteria form colonies of different colors or are unable to grown on VP8. The V3VPR probe is specific for the V3 variable area of the V. proteolyticus 16S rRNA gene. The probe identifies Vibrio strains other than V. proteolyticus but the other strains are unable to grow on VP8.

Enzymatic determination of itoic acid, a Bacillus subtilis siderophore, and 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic acid
Article Abstract:
The amino acid conjugates of 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic acid (2,3-DHBA) constitute a major class of siderophores to which itoic acid belongs. A specific enzymatic method for determining the amounts of itoic acid and 2,3-DHBA was developed. The procedure involved the use of hippurate hydrolase in the initial sample incubation, followed by 2,3-DHBA-3,4-dioxygenase treatment. Itoic acid levels could then be estimated by absorbance readings at 374 nm. For determining amounts of 2,3-DHBA, the first step was omitted.
