Inhibition of sulfate respiration by 1,8-dihydroxyanthraquinone and other anthraquinone derivates
Article Abstract:
The 1,8-dihydroxyanthraquinone and many of the anthraquinone derivatives are capable of reducing sulphate respiration in Desulfovibrio gigas, other sulfate-reducing bacteria and sulfate-reducing enrichments. This inhibition results from an uncoupling of the electron transfer from ATP synthesis. Low I(sub 50) values and low general toxicity in the anthraquinones indicate that they may be useful in the suppression of sulfide generation in conditions incompatible with the use of toxic biocides.

The low biomass yields of the acetic acid bacterium Acetobacter pasteurianus are due to a low stoichiometry of respiration-coupled proton translocation
Article Abstract:
Microbiological research shows that low levels of acetate are produced from the acetic acid bacterium Acetobacter pasteurianus in aerobic conditions and ethanol-limited chemostat cultures. Low ->H+/O stoichiometry calculations were established in acetate oxidation. Evidence suggests that the low -> H+/O ratio causes reduced respiratory dissimilation and thus low biomass yield.

Regulation of caffeate respiration in the acetogenic bacterium Acetobacterium woodii
Article Abstract:
The study explains the phenomenon of regulation of caffeate respiration in the acetogenic bacterium, Acetobacterium woodii that can easily conserve energy by oxidation processes. The reduction of caffeate-induced cells shows that caffeate also induces the enzymes required for oxidation of the methyl group of ferulate.
