Catabolism of 3-nitrophenol by Ralstonia eutropha JMP 134
Article Abstract:
Ralstonia eutropha JMP 134 uses 3-nitrophenol as the only source of nitrogen, carbon and energy. The whole metabolic pathway of 3-nitrophenol was chromosomally encoded. An initial NADPH-dependent reduction of 3-nitrophenol was observed in cell extracts of strain JMP 134. 3-Hydroxylaminophenol was determined as the initial reduction product. Resting cells of R. eutropha JMP 134 catabolized 3-nitrophenol to N-acetylaminohydroquinone under anaerobic conditions. With cell extracts, 3-hydroxyaminophenol was transformed into aminohydroquinone.

Initial hydrogenation and extensive reduction of substituted 2,4-dinitrophenols
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted on the reductive metabolism of ortho-substituted (-Cl, -CH3 and -NH2) 2,4-dinitrophenols as structural analogs of picric acid. A methyl group in the ortho position of the 2,4-dinitrophenol was found to trigger an extensive reduction of the aromatic ring under aerobic conditions. 2-methyl-4,6-dinitrophenol was thus shown to be converted to the two diastereomers of 4,6-dinitro-2-methylhexanoate as dead-end metabolites.
