Insertion elements IS1296 in Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. mycoides small colony identifies a European clonal line distinct from African and Australian strains
Article Abstract:
DNA fingerprinting of the insertion elements IS1296 in Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. mycoides small colony type shows that the European strains appear from clonal lines other than the African and Australian strains. Most of the European strains have the IS1296 E1 insertion element pattern while the African and Australian strains have the A1 pattern. The genetic insertion sequence transposes rarely and is stable. DNA fingerprinting of the insertion sequence provides reproducible results and effectively identifies different strains and subtyping.

Characterization of the gene for an immunodominant 72 kDa lipoprotein of Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. mycoides small colony type
Article Abstract:
The gene encoding a 72 kDa type-specific antigen of Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. mycoides small colony was identified and characterized. Named P72, it was expressed in Escherichia coli and its potential as a reagent for serological diagnosis assessed. Amino acid sequence analysis showed P72 to be a lipoprotein and trypsin treatment of whole cells confirmed its surface location. It was detected in 11/11 M. mycoides subsp. mycoides SC strains. Results affirm that it is a specific antigenic membrane lipoprotein of M. mycoides subsp. mycoides SC, with potential for use in the development of diagnostic reagents.
