Integration of microbial ecology and statistics: a test to compare gene libraries
Article Abstract:
The computer program, integration-LIBSHUFF, which calculates the integral form of the Crame-von Mises statistic, is presented for the growing statistical framework for comparing 16S rRNA libraries. The analyses shows the power of integration-LIBSHUFF to detect differences between communities, providing the basis for ecological inference about the association of soil productivity or host gene expression and microbial community composition.

Status of microbial census
Article Abstract:
The properties of microorganisms necessitate the use of indirect analysis, involving culturing or 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, to conduct a census of prokaryotes. Based on the unexpected relatively flat slope of the bacterial rarefaction curves it is contended that either current sampling methods are not adequate to identify 10(super 7) to 10(super 9) different species of bacteria or these estimates are high.

Introducing TreeClimber, a test to compare microbial community structures
Article Abstract:
The phylogenetic and ecological complexity of microbial communities necessitates the development of new methods to determine whether two or more communities have the same structure even though it is not possible to sample the communities exhaustively. The implementation of the parsimony test, Tree Climber is described.
