Isolation and characterization of a cyanophage infecting the toxic cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa
Article Abstract:
A cyanophage (Ma-LMM01) that infects a toxic strain of the bloom forming cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa was isolated and phylogenetic analyses revealed that Ma-LMM01 forms a sister group with marine and freshwater cyanobacteria. The studies could be used to control toxic cyanobacterial blooms since M. aeruginosa is highly noxious cyanobacteria that forms dense blooms in eutrophic freshwaters and is responsible for the death of livestock and wildlife.

Isolation and characterization of a novel single-stranded RNA virus infecting the bloom-forming diatom rhizosolenia setigera
Article Abstract:
A single-stranded RNA virus, specifically infecting rhizosolenia setigera was isolated from the Ariake Sea, Japan and viral replication happened within the cytoplasm. It was found that the virus particle lacked a tail and the major nucleic acid extracted from the RNA virus was a molecule but further studies are required to establish and understand the relationship between diatoms and viruses in nature.

Comparison of genome sequences of single-stranded RNA viruses infecting the bivalve-killing dinoflagellate Heterocapsa circularisquama
Article Abstract:
The genome structures of two typical Heterocapsa circularisquama RNA virus (HcRNAV) strains having different intraspecies host specificities are compared and a dendrogram describing the phylogeny of HcRNAV is constructed. The results have shown that capsid alterations can change the phytoplankton-virus (host-parasite) interactions in marine systems.
