Local survival of dunlin wintering in California
Article Abstract:
Mortality is an important part of population dynamics but is often poorly understood in birds. Data on breeding shorebirds is abundant but there is little demographic information about their life away from breeding grounds. A new study investigates the local annual survival rate of dunlins at Bolinas Lagoon, CA, between 1979 and 1992. The study shows little difference in the survival rates of males and females, although local survival rates of first-year birds were lower than adults.

Differences in wintering areas of Snowy Plovers from inland breeding sites in western North America
Article Abstract:
A five-year study of 522 adult and 506 juvenile Snowy Plovers, employing color banding of birds located at three interior breeding locations in western North America, revealed the Gulf of California coastline and the west coast of Baja Sur, Mexico, as the prime wintering locations for birds breeding in northern Utah. Age or gender failed to influence the selection of wintering zones by this species.

Sex ratios of Dunlin wintering at two latitudes on the Pacific coast
Article Abstract:
Research describing the sex ratios of coastal wintering Dunlin (Calidris alpina pacifica) is presented. The investigation shows a small bias towards male birds indicative of a latitudinal cline.
