Low power and implications for female mate choice theory
Article Abstract:
The differences in the nestling provisioning for the two groups of males, yearling and older birds explains the hypothesis of K.E. Omland and T.W. Sherry in 1994 about female choice of older mates in American Redstarts. However, they did not succeed in finding the differences in number of feeding trips per hour for the two age classes of males. But to dismiss their hypothesis would be improper. Emphasis should be on collection of more data to substantiate the study.

Foraging behavior of American Redstarts in breeding and wintering habitats: implications for relative food availability
Article Abstract:
The Redstarts are a migratory species for which food availability during winter and summer was compared. Predictors such as rate of attacks, foraging speed and methods were used and revealed that compared to summers, the wintering redstarts foraged quicker, hunted prey less frequently while spending more time foraging. This shows that the winter marks a period of food shortage while the breeding season of summers denoted a period of food abundance.

Parental care not likely to explain poor mating success in yearling male American Redstarts
Article Abstract:
The small age-related differences in male american Redstarts nestling-provisioning behavior is not likely to be important in females' choice of mate. The success in mating is significantly different in two stages of males. If other male traits have a greater effect on female choice, parental provisioning of nestlings is not likely to explain the poor mating success in yearling males.
