Marker-based investigation of inbreeding depression in the endangered species Brassica insularis
Article Abstract:
The effect of inbreeding depression on survival in two populations of the rare species Brassica insularis is investigated using both controlled crosses and a marker-based approach. Results show that although combining the approaches is not necessary to obtain simple point estimates of inbreeding depression, using molecular markers might give insight into the genetic basis of inbreeding depression, such as the occurrence of epistatic interactions among deleterious alleles or purging.

Insights into the urbilaterian brain: Conserved genetic patterning mechanisms in insect and vertebrate brain development
Article Abstract:
The correct regionalization and neuronal identity of the anterior brain anlage in both insects and vertebrates is controlled by the cephalic gap genes otd/Otx and ems/Emx, whereas members of the Hox genes are involved in patterning of the posterior brain. The findings demonstrate conserved genetic patterning mechanism in insect and vertebrate brain development and suggest a monophyletic origin over the brain in protostome and deuterostome bilaterians is presented.
