Relationship of hydrogen bioavailability to chromate reduction in aquifer sediments
Article Abstract:
Increasing the hydrogen concentration in aquifer sediments can select anaerobic bacteria that can reduce hexavalent chromium. Hexavalent chromium is a widespread environmental toxin, and these results show that bacteria in the aquifer can biodegrade the chemical.

Benzoyl-CoA metabolism in "Syntrophus aciditrophicus" differs from benzoyl-CoA metabolism in Rhodopseudomonas palustris and Thauera aromatica. The reaction involves a four- or six-electron reduction step that may be a result of energetic constraints. Benzoyl-CoA is the primary intermediate in the biodegradation of aromatic compounds.

Interspecies acetate transfer influences the extent of anaerobic benzoate degradation by syntrophic consortia
Article Abstract:
The degradation of benzoate by the strain SB anaerobic syntrophic bacteria cocultured with Desulfovibrio sp. strain G-11 depends on the initial acetate concentration and the interspecies acetate removal. The threshold value for the degradation of benzoate is proportional to the acetate added. There is no threshold limit if nitrate is the terminal electron acceptor instead of sulfate. Mathematical simulations suggest that the threshold is not due to the inhibitory effect of the acetate on the kinetics of benzoate degradation. The high concentrations of acetate suppress benzoate degradation.
