Metabolism of benzonitrile and butyronitrile by Klebsiella pneumoniae
Article Abstract:
The metabolism of a Klebsiella pneumonia strain which utilizes benzonitriles as the sole carbon and nitrogen source was investigated. Results showed that strain NCTR degraded both benzoic acid and ammonia. The isolate also metabolized butynitrile to ammonia butyramide. Furthermore, K. pneumonia utilized aliphatic nitriles such as benzamide, butyramide, benzoic acid and butyric acid as sources of nitrogen.

Reduction of malachite green to leucomalachite green by intestinal bacteria
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted on the metabolization of malachite green to leucomalachite green by bacteria in human gastrointestinal tracts. Intestinal bacteria studied include 14 pure cultures of anaerobic bacteria and intestinal microfloras from rat, monkey, mouse and human fecal samples. Results reveal how intestinal microflora influences triphenylmethane dye metabolic activation to carcinogens.

The anaerobic metabolic studies of human intestinal bacteria that reduce Sudan dyes to form potentially carcinogenic aromatic amines are demonstrated.
