Mice expressing activated CaMKII lack low frequency LTP and do not form stable place cells in the CA1 region of the hippocampus
Article Abstract:
The place cells of transgenic mice exhibiting mutated Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) with normal high frequency long-term potentiation (LTP). The transgenic hippocampal CA1 pyramidal cells are composed of 31% place cells compared to the wild-type hippocampus which is composed of 58% place cells. The CA1 pyramidal cells of the CaMKII-Asp286 transgenic mice also exhibited weaker positional firing patterns indicating the presence of less compact place fields compared to wild type CA1 positional firing.

Synapse-specific, long-term facilitation of aplysia sensory to motor synapses: A function for local protein synthesis in memory storage
Article Abstract:
Synaptic plasticity enables neurons to control the strength of their synaptic connections, and contributes to many physiological and pathological processes in the brain. Aplysia sensory-motor neuron cultures were examined to determine whether individual neurons show synapse specificity. Presynaptic sensory neuron axons deprived of their cell bodies were found to be capable of protein synthesis.
