Mining the microbiota of the neonatal gastrointestinal tract of conjugated linoleic acid-producing bifidobacteria
Article Abstract:
The strains of the genus Bifidobacterium was isolated and genomically characterized, by using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, from infant feces so that the genetically distinct strains could be assessed for their ability to produce the beneficial fatty acid conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) from free linoleic acid. The ability of particular strains to efficiently produce CLA influences the choice of bifidobacteria for supplementation in neonatal infants at risk of necrotizing enterocolitis.

Casein fermentate of Lactobacillus animalis DPC6134 contains a range of novel propeptide angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors
Article Abstract:
The angiotensin-converting-enzyme (ACE)-inhibitory activities of a bovine sodium caseinate fermentate generated using the proteolytic capabilities of the porcine small intestinal isolate Lactobacillus animals DPC6134 are examined. ACE-inhibitory activity of 85.51 percent and 50 percent inhibitory concentration of 0.8mg protein/ml were observed in the crude 10-kDa Lactobacillus animalis DPC6134.

Rapid screening method for analyzing the conjugated linoleic acid production capabilities of bacterial cultures
Article Abstract:
A rapid method is described for identifying bacteria that convert free linoleic acid to conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), which is based on spectrophotometric detection of CLA. This new method can be used for high-throughput screening of bacterial isolates for producing conjugated fatty acids.
