Mitochondrial DNA and microsatellite DNA variation in domestic reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) and relationships with wild caribou (Rangifer tarandus granti, Rangifer tarandus groenlandicus, and Rangifer tarandus caribou)
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to quantify the genetic variation at eighteen microsatellite DN A loci and the cytochrome 'b' gene of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in reindeer from Alaska, Siberia, and Scandinavia, and was compared with wild North American caribou. It was observed that the frequencies of microsatellite alleles and mtDNA haplotypes were different in reindeers and wild caribou.

Microsatellite diversity and fitness in stranded juvenile harp seals (Phoco groenlandica)
Article Abstract:
Microsatellite markers were used to examine patterns of genetic diversity in harp seals standing around Long Island, New York. Results show that microsatellite mean [d.sup.2] estimates can provide an effective index of fitness in some species with large population size and high genetic variation.

Evolution and differentiation of MSHR gene in different species
Article Abstract:
The melanocyte-stimulating hormone receptor (MSHR) gene is analyzed for evolution and differentiation in different species. The stop codon present in different species of mammals and birds show mutations giving rise to melanocyte-stimulating hormone receptor color interspecific variation.
