Expression of the actin gene family in embryos of the sea urchin Lytechinus pictus
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to characterize the patterns of expression of the actin gene family in embryos of the sea urchin, Lytechinus pictus, using in situ hybridization. DNA clones corresponding to the LpC1 actin gene revealed a sequence similar to the Strongylocentrotus purpuratus CyI actin gene and was expressed in the archenteron and secondary mesenchyme cells. The LpC2 actin gene was expressed in high levels in the aboral ectoderm and had a pattern of expression similar to the S. purpuratus SpCyIIIa and SpCyIIIb actin genes. Thee LpC3 and LpC4 genes were expressed in secondary mesenchyme and primary mesenchyme cells, respectively, while the LpM gene was predominant in esophageal muscle cells.

Integrin alpha(sub v) subunit is expressed on mesodermal cell surfaces during amphibian gastrulation
Article Abstract:
Investigation of the role of alpha(sub v)-containing integrin heterodimers in amphibian gastrulation was carried out, using homology PCR to clone the Pleurodeles homologue of the integrin alpha(sub v) subunit. A post-translational mechanism correlated with the start of mesodermal cell migration at gastrulation regulates developmental expression of alpha(sub v). In oocytes and embryos, the alpha(sub v) protein and messenger RNA are widely expressed, but during development, cell surface expression of the alpha(sub v) integrins becomes temporally and spatially regulated. At gastrulation, cell surface expression occurs primarily in mesodermal cells.
