Nest initiation and clutch size of Great Blue Herons on the Mississippi River in relation to the 1993 flood
Article Abstract:
Floods in the midwestern US in 1993 seem to have reduced the quality and availability of feeding habitat and thus decreased the reproduction rate in the Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias). Clutch size was smaller in the southern nests compared to those in the northern nests where the impact of floods was less. The egg size was, however, the same in both sites. Initiation of nesting was delayed in the southern sites, probably due to nonavailability of feeding habitat. The timing of nesting and the number of eggs per clutch were the same between the northern and southern sites in 1995 when there were no floods.

The proximate effects of rainfall on clutch size of the California Gnatcatcher
Article Abstract:
Much of the variation in clutch size among the California Gnatcatcher is attributable to environmental conditions during egg formation, even though mean clutch size is probably determined by evolutionary factors. It has been established that seasonal rainfall does not have a substantial impact on clutch size in the California Gnatcatcher, although more immediate rainfall does. Clutch size is reduced when rainfall is low during egg formation, but is modal when rainfall is average during this time.

Responses of egg-laying Pied Flycatchers to experimental changes in clutch size: a re-examination
Article Abstract:
Research concerning the egg-laying habits of Pied Flycatchers in Wales is presented. It is shown that the birds are able to lay more eggs if clutch sizes are reduced but do not reduce egg numbers when clutch sizes are artificially increased.
