Nickel availability adn hupSL activation by heterologous regulators limit symbiotic expression of the Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. viciae hydrogenase system in Hup(super -) rhizobia
Article Abstract:
The availability of nickel and heterologous regulators affects hydrogenase activity in Rhizobium leguminosarum. The regulators activate transcription of the Hup genes, which control the recycling of hydrogen produced by nitrogen fixation.

Symbiotic hydrogenase activity in Bradyrhizobium sp. (Vigna) increases nitrogen content in Vigna unguiculata plants
Article Abstract:
Bradyrhizobium sp. (Lupinus) and Bradyrhizobium sp. (Vigna) mutants in which hydrogenase (hup) activity is affected are constructed and analyzed. Vigna unguiculata plants inoculated with the Bradyrhizobium sp. (Vigna) hup mutant revealed reduced nitrogenase activity and also a significant decrease in nitrogen content, suggesting a relevant contribution of hydrogenase activity to plant yield.

Rhizobium leguminosarum biovar viciae symbiotic hydrogenase activity and processing are limited by the level of nickel in agricultural soils
Article Abstract:
Hydrogen metabolism in pea bacteroids from plants grown in different soils are studied to ascertain whether Ni content in soils could indeed affect hydrogen oxidation by the Rhizobium-legume symbiosis. Results indicate that bacteroid hydrogenase processing and activity could be used as a biosensor for soil Ni bioactivity to legume plants.
