Succession of microbial communities during hot composting as detected by PCR-single-strand-conformation polymorphism-based genetic profiles of small-subunit rRNA genes
Article Abstract:
Researchers describe the use of PCR and single-strand conformation polymorphism to identify the succession of microbial communities in compost piles. This technique has obvious advantages over traditional culture methods. A total of 290 isolates from 6 different species were identified.

Effect of field inoculation with Sinorhizobium meliloti L33 on the composition of bacterial communities in rhizospheres of a target plant (Medicago sativa) and a non-target plant (Chenopodium album): linking of 16S rRNA gene-based single-strand conformation polymorphism community profiles to the diversity of cultivated bacteria
Article Abstract:
Genetically modified organisms introduced into soil to fix nitrogen will probably have some impact on soil bacterial communities. In a study of Sinorhizobium meliloti L33, the inoculant occurred spread to uninoculated soil within 12 to 14 weeks.

Article Abstract:
PCR targeted to different variable regions of bacterial 16S rRNA can produce variable results. A study of 13 different bacterial species found fewer bands with primers targeting the V4-V5 region than with primers targeting V2-V3 and V6-V8.
