Nitrification and denitrification in lake and estuarine sediments measured by the 15N dilution technique and isotope pairing
Article Abstract:
Lake and estuarine sediment samples were analyzed for nitrification and denitrification rates in a continuous-flowthrough system using the 15N dilution technique and isotope pairing. The results showed that 100% of the total nitrate uptake in both sediments could be accounted for by denitrification originating from the overlying water. When denitrification was coupled to nitrification, the coupled process accounted for 10% of the total denitrification at steady state in the dark. On the other hand, the coupled process accounted for 50% of the total nitrification.

A microsensor for nitrate based on immobilized denitrifying bacteria
Article Abstract:
A biosensor for nitrate can be constructed by inserting a N2O microsensor into a 30- to 70-micrometer wide capillary with immobilized denitrifying bacteria. The bacteria reduces O2 so that anaerobic denitrification is possible at lower levels of the capillary while the bacteria at the tip of the capillary are exposed to O2. Acetylene is added to block nitrous oxide reductase. The reduction of NO3- or NO2- by the bacteria to N2O is measured by the sensor. The N2O evolved is proportional to NO3- in the culture.
