PAF1-complex-mediated histone methylation of FLOWERING LOCUS C chromatin is required for the vernalization-responsive, winter-annual habit in Arabidopsis
Article Abstract:
The identification of two genes involved in FLC activation: ELF7, which encodes the Arabidopsis relative of yeast RNA ploymerase II (PollI) Associated Factor 1 (PAF1), and ELF8, which encodes the Arabidopsis relative of yeast CLN Three Requiring 9 (CTR9) is presented. Lesions in ELF7 and ELF8 cause early flowering in an otherwise late-flowering, FRI-containing line by suppressing FLC expression, and also cause early flowering in noninductive photoperiods by suppressing expression of the MADS-box genes FLOWRING LOCUS M (FLM) and MADS AFFECTING FLOWERING 2(MAF2).

The transcription factor FLC confers a flowering response to vernalization by repressing meristem competence and systematic signaling in Arabidopsis
Article Abstract:
The delay in flowering caused by Flowering Locus C (FLC) by repressing production in the leaf of at least two systematic signals, one of which is controlled by the RAF kinase inhibitor-like protein Flowering Locus T (FT) is shown. An analysis of the tissues is described in which key Arabidopsis genes involved in vernalization act to control flowering and demonstrate the significance of transcriptional regulation in the phloem and the meristem for the vernalization response.

siRNAs targeting an intronic transposon in the regulation of natural flowering behavior in Arabidopsis
Article Abstract:
The transposable element rendering FLC (FLOWERING LOCUS C), subject to repressive chromatin modifications mediated by short interfering RNAs generated from homologous transposable elements in the genome is shown. The studies have general implications for the role of transposable elements in eukaryotic gene expression and evolution.
