Patterns and processes of genic divergence between D. melanogaster and its sibling species, Drosophila simulans
Article Abstract:
Electrophoretic data was used to calculate genetic divergence of Drosophila melanogaster and D. simulans. A group of protein-coding loci have diverged to the point where the two species have no alleles in common. The divergence rates for different classes of loci were markedly heterogenous. In addition, no correlation was found between the amount of genetic variation at a locus within either species and the degree of divergence between species at that locus. The effects of natural selection were believed responsible for the rates which were lower than expected.

Variation in sperm displacement and its association with accessory gland protein loci in Drosophila melanogaster
Article Abstract:
Sperm displacement tests on 152 homozygous lines of Drosophila melanogaster reveal that they exhibit high heterogeneity in sperm displacement in both the defense and offense directions. Analysis of sperm displacement indicates that the sperm displacement phenomenon is mediated by accessory gland protein genes. Capacity to displace resident sperm exhibits no correlation with the efficiency to resist being displaced by another sperm, indicating the involvement of distinct mechanisms in the two components of sperm displacement.

Intraspecific and interspecific variation at the y-ac-sc region of Drosophila simulans and Drosophila melanogaster
Article Abstract:
Sequencing of a region that included the ac gene of Drosophila simulans and D. melanogaster was employed in the study of interspecific divergence. A low level of polymorphism was found for this region, which corroborated the hypothesis of a hitchhiking effect of a selectively favorable mutation. Divergence estimates for silent sites were comparable for those for all sites, indicating that silent sites are not under strong functional constraint.
