Manganous ions suppress photosynthesis gene expression in Rhodobacter sphaeroides
Article Abstract:
Experiments were performed to explore the effects of manganous ions (MnII) and ferrous ions on the photosynthesis expression genes in Rhodobacter sphaeroides. Results showed that lowered amounts of bacteriochlorophyll and carotenoid pigments were observed in the presence of MnII during phototrophic and chemotrophic growth of R. sphaeroides. Moreover, MnII was also observed to lower the expression of the puc operon which encodes the polypeptides of light-harvesting complex II.

Regulation of photosynthetic gene expression in purple bacteria
Article Abstract:
The main parts of purple bacteria involved in the regulation of photosynthetic gene expression were determined. They are the oxygen-responsive repressor PpsR and proteins which control its activity, such as AppA, the Reg/Prr activating system and at least in Rhodobacter sphaeroides, Fnr. Two lines of research are suggested. One is on in vitro characterization of the molecular behavior of the regulatory systems. Another is on how the different regulatory systems interact.
