Physiological ecology of Methanobrevibacter cuticularis sp. nov. and Methanobrevibacter curvatus sp. nov., isolated from the hindgut of the termite Reticulitermes flavipes
Article Abstract:
Two strains of carbon dioxide-utilizing methanogens were isolated from the hindgut of the termite Reticulitermes flavipes. Biochemical methods characterized strain RFM-1 as a short straight rod and RFM-2 as a slightly curved rod and both showed gram-positive staining reaction. Molecular analysis revealed that the two strains are not members of the family Methanobacteriaceae, but are new species of Methanobrevibacter, M. cuticularis (strain RFM-1) and M. curvatus (strain RFM-2).

Stenoxybacter acetivorans gen. nov., sp. nov., an acetate-oxidizing obligate microaerophile among diverse [O.sub.2]-consuming bacteria from termite guts
Article Abstract:
Cultivation-based approach is used for isolating [O.sub.2]-consuming organisms from hindguts of Reticulitermes flavipes. The genetic and physiological distinctiveness of TAM-DN1 and related strains have supported their recognition as a new genus and species, which is named as Stenoxybacter acetivorans gen. nov., sp. nov.
