Pilot-scale selenium bioremediation of San Joaquin drainage water with Thauera selenatis
Article Abstract:
A pilot-scale biological reactor system at the Panoche Water District, San Joaquin Valley, California, is effective in bioremediation of selenium from drainage water, with the selenate-respiring bacterium Thauera selenatis. There is a decrease in the selenium oxyanion, and the nitrate and nitrite concentrations in the drainage water. The effluent concentrations in the reactor also decrease to about 5 microgram/liter. About 91% to 96% of the recovered selenium is elemental in nature, which is easily removed with the help of a precipitant coagulant.

PCR-mediated detection of acidophilic, bioleaching-associated bacteria
Article Abstract:
The polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-mediated detection of acidophilic, bioleaching-associated bacteria was investigated. The PCR methods were developed to amplify small-nutrient ribosomal RNA sequences from the DNA of bacterial phylotypes. These phylotypes are associated with acidic mining environments. Results indicate that efficient manipulation and design of such complex operations can use the acid of this new method.

A new chemolithoautotrophic arsenite-oxidizing bacterium isolated from a gold mine:phylogenetic, physiological, and preliminary biochemical studies
Article Abstract:
A previously unknown chemolithoautotrophic bacterium that can oxidize arsenite is described. It was isolated from a gold mine in Australia and grows very rapidly on arsenite, oxgen and carbon dioxide, with a doubling time of 7.6 hours.
