Purification and characterization of a lovastatin esterase from Clonostachys compactiuscula
Article Abstract:
The lovastatin 8'-(alpha-methylbutyryloxy) esterase from the fungus Clonostachys compactiuscula selectively hydrolyzes an antihypercholesterolemic agent. Lovastatin esterase activity was found to be highest at pH 9.0 to 9.6 and at 25 to 30 degrees C. The addition of 5 to 20% methanol induced greater lovastatin hydrolysis, while the addition of other solvents decreased hydrolysis. Lovastatin was selectively hydrolyzed even when there is excess simvastatin, another antihypercholesterolemic agent that is structurally very similar to lovastatin.

Effect of butyrolactone I on the producing fungus, Aspergillus terreus
Article Abstract:
The effects of butyrolactone I on changes in morphology, sporulation and secondary metabolism in Aspergillus terreus were examined. When butyrolactone I was added to cultures of the bacteria, threefold or greater increases in hyphal branching, submerged sporulation and secondary metabolism were observed, Findings indicated that butyrolactone I induced morphological and sporulation changes in A. terreus and improved secondary metabolite production.

Lovastatin biosynthesis by Aspergillus terreus in a chemically defined medium
Article Abstract:
Glutamate and histidine produce the greatest production of lovastatin by Aspergillus terreus among all potential nitrogen sources. Lovastatin is also produced only under conditions of carbon starvation. Lovastatin is a drug used to lower blood cholesterol levels.
