Plasmid pCAR3 contains multiple gene sets involved in the conversion of carbazole to anthranilate
Article Abstract:
The draft sequence of the 254-kb circular plasmid pCAR3 is used to find multiple carbazole degradation genes dispersed in four loci on CAR3, including a second copy of the car gene cluster and the ferredoxin/reductase genes fdxI-fdrI and fdrII. Reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR) and quantitative RT-PCR analyses have shown that two car gene clusters constituted operons, and their expression was induced when KA1 was exposed to carbazole, although the fdxI-fdrI genes and fdrII genes were expressed constitutively.

Macroscopic streamer growths in acidic, metal-rich mine waters in North Wales consist of novel and remarkably simple bacterial communities
Article Abstract:
The microbial composition of acid streamers (macroscopic biofilms) in acidic, metal-rich waters in two locations in North Wales was studied using cultivation based and biomolecular techniques. The results showed that the microbial communities that comprise macroscopic streamer growths found in acidic iron-rich mine waters could vary widely from site to site.

Purification, characterization, and gene cloning of a novel maltosyltransferase form an Arthrobacter globiformis strain that produces an alternating Greek small letter alpha-1,4- and Greek small letter alpha-1,6-cyclic tetrasaccharide from starch
Article Abstract:
A glycosyltransferase involved in the synthesis of cyclic maltosylmaltose from starch was purified to homogeneity from the culture supernatant of Arthrobacter globiformis M6. The four conserved regions common in the Greek small letter alpha-amylase family enzymes were also found in 6Mt indicating that 6MT should be assigned to this family.
