Poliovirus-1 inactivation and interaction with biofilm: a pilot-scale study
Article Abstract:
A series of experiments involving pulse inoculations of known amounts of viruses into a distribution system was conducted to determine the role of viral inactivation and viral adsorption to the biofilm. The residence time of the virus in the pilot plant after pulse inoculation was enhanced by virus readsorption on 40 milligrams per liter of Na-montmorillonite. Furthermore, virus recovery in the presence or absence of chlorine was greater from the biofilms than from the water flow due to the tendency of poliovirus-1 to accumulate within biofilms.

Viral pollution in the environment and in shellfish: human adenovirus detection by PCR as an index of human viruses
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to examine viral pollution in shellfish and in seawater, sewage and river water. Human adenoviruses were detected using DNA and cDNA amplification techniques by PCR. Viral DNA and cDNA amplification demonstrated a high prevalence of human viruses that could not have been detected with the use of classical methods. Results indicate that the human adenovirus PCR test used could be used as a molecular index for the presence of human viruses in the environment.

Direct sequencing of hepatitis A virus strains isolated during an epidemic in France
Article Abstract:
An analysis of stool samples of patients suffering from hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection during an epidemic in France, indicates that the consumption of shellfish was the likely cause of HAV infection. Comparison of the DNA sequences of PCR products of HAV cell culture isolates and of environmental samples reveals the presence of two subgenotypes, IA and IB, in France. These two subgenotypes are also present in shellfish samples.
