Polymerases and the replisome: machines within machines
Article Abstract:
Multiple polypeptides in the replication fork are proteins that assemble and synthesize new DNA chains at a pace nearly 1,000 nucleotides per second in Escherichia coli. The replication fork embodies at least three distinct polymerase activities, including a primase and a replicative polymerase for each of the two template strands. The structure of the polymerase is characterized by a cleft comprised of three subdomains and several replicative and repair DNA polymerases from viral, prokaryotic, and eukaryotic sources.

IAP family proteins - suppressors of apoptosis
Article Abstract:
Studies on inhibitor of apoptosis (IAP) proteins suggest that they may play important roles in human disease. By studying IAPs as they occur in baculoviruses, researchers were able to determine that the proteins helped suppress host cell death response, or apoptosis, to viral infections. Further research is expected to identify the mechanism used by IAPs to foster suppression.
