Preparation of encapsulated microbial cells for environmental applications
Article Abstract:
Immobilization of bacteria using a modified method in encapsulating active cells of pollutant- degrading bacteria was done using alginate, agarose, or polyurethane as immobilization matrices. These matrices were formed into microbeads with the active cells entrapped within by aerosol polymerization using an immobilizationapparatus. A spectrophotometric assay showed high rates of pollutant degradation by the encapsulated cells which showed that this technique has potential use for biodegradation application.

Microbial diversity and its relationship to planetary protection
Article Abstract:
The solar system and the universe are explored by spacefaring nations who should avoid biological contamination of other planetary systems while protecting the Earth from potential harm caused by materials when returning from space. It is suggested that natural environments in our solar system that harbor life should be protected so that they retain value for scientific purposes as planetary missions search for organic material on and beneath the surface of other planets.

Toxic effects of modified Fenton reactions on Xanthobacter flavus FB71
Article Abstract:
The toxic effects of modified Fenton reactions on Xanthobacter flavus FB71 were explored. Results showed that there are toxic effects of Fenton reactions on peroxide-acclimated bacteria which are attributed to the production of hydroxyl and other oxygen radicals. The cellular protective mechanism against peroxide and oxygen radical toxicity was shown to be an increase in catalase activity.
