Problems in measuring bacterial diversity and a possible solution
Article Abstract:
The indices of species diversity used by ecologists are incorrect for bacterial diversity because of the inherent difficulty in defining a bacterial species. The arbitrary cutoff points for defining a biotype gives statistical problems. A mean dissimilarity-based index that does not define a species is a statistically appropriate measurement of bacterial diversity. This approach is most suitable for bacterial communities.

Detection of Methylobacterium species by 16S rRNA gene-targeted PCR
Article Abstract:
PCR primers for specific amplification of the 16S rRNA genes of seven species of the genus Methylobacterium were developed. All of the pairwise species tested were successfully differentiated by PCR detection with a combination of five primer sets, with the exception of M. extorquens and M. rhodesianum. These primers did not cross-react with closely related bacteria in the alpha subclass examined.

Visual reading method for the detection of bacterial tannase
Article Abstract:
A newly developed visual reading method was used for the characterization of bacterial tannase activity capable of degrading tannin-protein complexes. The hydrolyzation of methyl gallate for the free release of gallic acid by tannase and the color transformation resulting from prolonged exposure to alkaline oxygen were the basis of this method. The utility of the method was demonstrated.
