Production of a DPP activity gradient in the early drosophila embryo through the opposing actions of the SOG and TLD proteins
Article Abstract:
Many zygotic gene products establish a posttranscriptional activity of the DPP morphogen during early Drosophila embryogenesis. DPP function is enhanced by tolloid, a putative metalloprotease related to BMP-1, but is inhibited by SOG, an ortholog of the Xenopus organizer Chordin. TLD was found to negate the inhibitory effects of SOG/CHD on DPP/BMP ligands, based on epistasis tests and a Xenopus secondary axis induction assay. Production of the embryonic DPP activity gradient is thought to involve the opposing effects.

The FHIT gene at 3p14.2 is abnormal in lung cancer
Article Abstract:
Analysis of lung cancer cells showed 80% of small cell lung tumors and 40% of the non-small cells manifesting abnormalities in fragile histidine triad (FHIT) RNA transcripts. Further testing showed 70% of the cells exhibiting loss of the FHIT alleles. Analysis of the tumors and cell lines showed absence of several exons of the FHIT genes with an accompanying rearrangement of the BamHI fragments. It was concluded that the FHIT gene has a role at the 3p14.2 site in lung carcinogenesis.
