Proteolytic activities in two wood-decaying basidiomycete fungi, Serpula lacrymans and Coriolus versicolor
Article Abstract:
A study of the proteolytic enzyme activities of Serpula lacrymans and Coriolus versicolor, the wood decaying basidiomycetes by polyacrylamide gels containing gelatin and electrophoretic analysis shows that both the fungi release different proteases and intracellular protein mobilization acts as a crucial factor in them. Wood-decaying basidiomycetes develop colonies with wood and regulation of proteinases is a part of physiological processes of morphogenesis. The properties and enzymatic activities of Serpula lacrymans and Coriolus versicolor are discussed.

Multiple cysteine proteinases of the pathogenic protozoon Tritrichomonas foetus: identification of seven diverse and differentially expressed genes
Article Abstract:
The pathogenic protozoan Tritrichomonas foetus F2 contains seven genes which encode cysteine proteinases. The enzymes are similar to cathepsin-L. The greatest structural similarity exists between the TFCP7 and TFCP8 genes while the least similarity is between the TFCP3 and TFCP9 genes. Multiple copies of the TFCP3 gene are present while the other genes have single copies. The TFCP8 gene shows the greatest transcription while the TFCP4 gene shows the least transcription. Other isolates have different gene expressions but TFCP8 encodes the main enzyme.

Biological control of Pythium ultimum by Stenotrophomonas maltophilia W81 is mediated by an extracellular proteolytic activity
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted on a rhizosphere isolate obtained from field-grown sugar beet, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia W81. The findings indicate that the ability of S maltophilia W81 to protect sugar beet from Pythium-mediated damping-off can be attributed to the production of a extracellular protease. The results also suggest that protease production may be useful in the construction of novel, genetically modified biocontrol inoculants.
