Quantitative use of fluorescent in situ hybridization to examine relationships between mycolic acid-containing actinomycetes and foaming in activated sludge plants
Article Abstract:
Fluorescent in situ hybridization can be used to quantify mycolic acid-containing actinomycetes that form a foam in activated sludge plants. Using this technique, researchers found the threshold concentration of mycolata to create a foam was 4 x 10 (super 12) cells per square meter.

Agreement between theory and measurement in quantification of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria
Article Abstract:
The corroboration of quantitative measurement of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) by fluorescence in situ hybridization was relied on assessment of the ammonia oxidation rate per cell, relative to published vales for cultured AOB. When the measured AOB biomass was compared with process-based estimates of AOB biomass, the two values were in agreement.

Development of a rapid assay for determining the relative abundance of bacteria
Article Abstract:
A sandwich hybridization assay for high-throughput, rapid, simple, and inexpensive quantification of specific microbial populations is explored. The RNA assay has good specificity, permitted discrimination of rRNA sequences that differed by a 2-bp mismatch in the probe target region and distinguished the sizes of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) populations in nitrifying and nonnitrifying wastewater treatment plants.
