Recombination-dependent mutation in Escherichia coli occurs in stationary phase
Article Abstract:
A lac frameshift reversion assay system, together with reconstruction studies, was used to determine whether recombination-dependent mutation in Escherichia coli happens during the stationary phase. Fourteen out of the 15 late-arising colonies of recA examined were not slow-growers. The only slow-growing mutants had most of colonies emerging on the fifth day. The findings reinforced the hypothesis that recombination-dependent hypermutation transpires when the cells are starving.

J.B.S. Haldane (1949) on infectious disease and evolution
Article Abstract:
J.B.S. Haldane published his views about the link between infectious diseases (ID) and evolution in the La Ricerca Scientifica research journal in 1949. Haldane argued that ID could be a potent agent of natural selection, noting that it is easier for a mouse to obtain a set of genes that resist Bacillus typhimurium than that which resist cats. He based his argument on ID's density dependence, which he believed as the ultimate restraint on population size.

Genetic recombination in Escherichia coli: disputation at Cold Spring Harbor, 1946-1996
Article Abstract:
The July 1946 Cold Spring Harbor Symposium failed to develop accurate genetic microbiology experiments despite its focus on the genetics of microorganisms. Such experiments, which would have significantly advanced the field, involve the genetic recombination of Escherichia coli. The failure is not likely to occur in the scientific setting of the 1990s since current undertakings receive adequate funding and the scientific population has increased.
