Regulation of chitin synthesis during dimorphic growth of Candida albicans
Article Abstract:
Candida albicans has three genes encoding chitin synthase enzymes. The expression of CHS2 and CHS3 reached maximum value after stimulation of hyphal growth while mRNA levels in a non-germinative strain, CA2, remained low under the same conditions. CHS1 gene expression failed to peak during germ tube formation but instead remained at low levels in both yeast and hyphal growth. The pattern of gene expression had no relation to changes in measured chitin synthase activities or changes in chitin content during dimorphic transition.

Phenotypic characterization of a Candida albicans strain deficient in its major exoglucanase
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted on a strain deficient XOG1 gene of Candida albicans to determine its role in virulence and its functional implications. Results have shown that the gene is responsible for the major exoglucanase activity in Candida albicans although the gene is not essential for its growth. Moreover, there are no significant differences in virulence between the wild-type strain and null mutants.

Thigmotropism and stretch-activated channels in the pathogenic fungus Candida albicans
Article Abstract:
Candida albicans is an opportunistic pathogenic fungus, and the direction of growth of its hyphae thigmotropically responds to surface contours. It is reported that the thigmotropic response to ridges is reduced by GdCIsub3 and verapamil. This suggests a potential role for stretch-activated (SA) ion channels and L-type calcium channels in the transduction of the thigmotropic response.
