Relationship between glycocalyx and povidone-iodine resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853) biofilms
Article Abstract:
Investigation of the relation of glycocalyx with povidone-iodine resistance in biofilms of planktonic Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853) reveals that differences in the distribution of the glycocalyx material around cells are responsible for the higher resistance in biofilms compared to planktonic samples. Analysis of the relation of cell death with biomass detachment from the glycocalyx material indicates that occurrence of cell death is high in the fraction of biomass detached from the biofilm. Protective layering of cells within the glycocalyx accounts for the povidone-iodine resistance.

Cell density and growth phase as factors in the resistance of a biofilm of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853) to iodine
Article Abstract:
The relative contributions of growth phase and cell density on biofilm resistance of Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853 to iodine were investigated. The results showed that the growth phase of cells is not involved in biofilm resistance to iodine. On the other hand, iodine resistance could be correlated to the cell density levels. These results indicate that the factors involved in iodine resistance of biofilms are related to cell density and probably nutrient availability.

Microcompartments in prokaryotes: carboxysomes and related polyhedra
Article Abstract:
Research on the carboxysomes of cyanobacteria and chemoautotrophs is described. These are polyhedral inclusion bodies bound by a protein shell that contain ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase.
