Ubiquinone limits oxidative stress in Escherichia coli
Article Abstract:
Research shows that reduced ubiquinone serves as an antioxidant in Escherichia coli as revealed by mutant analysis. Data indicate that this property of reduced ubiquinone is similar to that occurring in the mammalian systems.

Requirement for ubiquinone downstream of cytochrome(s) b in the oxygen-terminated respiratory chains of Escherichia coli K-12 revealed using a null mutant allele of ubiCA
Article Abstract:
An Escherichia coli knockout ubiCA mutant was obtained through gene replacement. The mutant was incapable of synthesizing ubiquinone and had severely reduced growth yields aerobically but not anaerobically with either nitrate or fumarate as terminal electron acceptors. Low oxygen uptake rates were observed in membrane preparations. However, these rates substantially improved through the addition of ubiquinone-1.

A factor produced by Escherichia coli K-12 inhibits the growth of E. coli mutants defective in the cytochrome bd quinol oxidase complex: enterochelin rediscovered
Article Abstract:
The extracellular factor that restricts the growth of Cyd- mutants in the Escherichia coli was investigated. These mutants showed defects in the synthesis or assembly of the cytochrome bd-type quinol oxidase required in cellular physiology. It was discovered that cytochrome bd mutants were sensitive to low concentrations and that enterochelin and other iron chelators were efficient growth inhibitors of Cyd- mutants, in contrast with previous studies that the extracellular factor was hydrogen peroxide.
