Rhomboid and Star facilitate presentation and processing of the Drosophila TGF-alpha homolog Spitz
Article Abstract:
Star and Rhomboid have been found to facilitate processing and presentation of the Drosophila TGF-alpha homolog Spitz. To test certain models, an assay based on Xenopus animal caps has been developed. Spi activates DER, the epidermal growth factor receptor, in a Rhomboid and Star-dependent way in these animal caps.In one model Rhomboid and Star regulate processing of membrane-bound Spi to an active soluble form Other models would have Rhomboid and Star regulating receptor function or involved in formed a complex at the cell surface bringing recedptor and ligand together.

Receptor tyrosine kinases: specific outcomes from general signals
Article Abstract:
Receptor tyrosine kinases (RTK) and specific outcomes from general signals are discussed in this review article which deals with why one cell may become a neuron in response to RTK activation and another might become an adipocyte. Topics include models for RTK signaling specificity, the role of the DER RTK in inducing specific gene expression in the developing Drosophila eye, evidence for a difference between Sevenless and DER signaling. Individual cells often have fates established by activating transmembrane receptors of the Receptor Tyrosine Kinase family.

Nrarp is a novel intracellular component of the Notch signaling pathway
Article Abstract:
Nrarp, which in embryos promotes loss of the intracellular domain (ICD) has been found to be an intracellular component of the Notch signaling pathway based on work in Xenopus embryos. Nrarp (ital) is in the Delta-Notch synexpression group. It encodes a small protein with two ankyrin repeats. Nrarp may be a negative feedback regulator for Notch signaling and attenuate ICD-mediated transcription.
