Root colonization by Agrobacterium tumefaciens is reduced in cel, attB, attD, and attR mutants
Article Abstract:
An experiment was conducted to study the role of genes from the bacterial chromosome (att gene) and the bacterial cellulose synthesis (cel gene) in the interaction of bacteria with the cell surface of intact roots using wild-type strains of C58 Agrobacterium species. The strains were able to invade the cut roots of both the Arabidopsis thaliana and tomato plants. However, mutant strains of the cel and att genes failed to grow abundantly in similar roots.

Acquisition of an agrobacterium Ri plasmid and pathogenicity by other alpha-proteobacteria in cucumber and tomato crops affected by root mat
Article Abstract:
Besides root mat of cucumbers and tomatoes, nine other pTi-harboring alpha-proteobacteria are isolated from root mat-infected crops. Individual strains from these genera had transformation rates comparable to those observed from cotyledons inoculated with a rhizogenic Sinorhizobium strain.

The effect of the Agrobacterium tumofaciens attR mutation on attachment and root colonization differs between legumes and other dicots
Article Abstract:
Agrobacterium tumefaciens appears to have two mechanisms for attaching to the roots of plants, one for legumes and one for non-legumes. One mechanism involves a transacetylase and can be blocked by acetylated capsular polysaccharide. The other one has neither feature.
